Meet Tyson Oblad, set to see 40 football games in his 40th anniversary – the Athletic

Tuesday night, Tyson Oblad plans to arrive at Waldo Stadium in Kalamazoo, Mich., In time to enjoy the pre-game festivities and roughly the first half of Western Michigan’s 7pm game against Akron. He’ll then get back into his car and drive about 100 miles to Ypsilanti for the second half of the Eastern Michigan 20-hour game against Ohio.

Wednesday night, he will be in Bowling Green for the battle of I-75 against Toledo. Then on to Pittsburgh for Thursday night’s ACC shock between Pitt and North Carolina, followed by a Friday morning flight to Tampa to catch up with Cincinnati at USF.

And on Saturday, he will try to attend three different college games in the state of Texas – Southern Miss at UTSA, Georgia Southern at Texas State and Kansas at Texas.

Oblad is not a fan of any of these schools. His team is BYU. But he’s a college football junkie who is celebrating his 40th birthday by attending 40 football games in the 2021 season – his own personal ’40 for 40′ project. As of this writing, he’s just over halfway there, having attended 18 college games and five NFL games.

Oblad was in Champaign, Ill. For the Week 0 Nebraska-Illinois game. He watched his alma mater end a nine-game losing streak against rival Utah. He was in the stands when the Oklahoma students started chanting “We want Caleb!” ”
