What are President Joe Biden’s approval ratings? Poll shows how Utahns feel

President Joe Biden’s job performance rating continues to languish among voters in Utah.

A new Deseret News / Hinckley Institute of Politics poll found that just 32% of state residents approve of the way the president does his job, while 63% disapprove, with just over half strongly disapproving.

Presidents often expect their approvals to drop in their first year in office, but that’s a low approval rate, even for a Democrat in Utah, said Jason Perry, director of the Hinckley Institute of Politics from the University of Utah.

During his first year in office, Biden faced several critical challenges, including the controversial withdrawal from Afghanistan, rising COVID-19 numbers, a federal vaccine mandate, and a polarized Congress, not to mention to name a few, he said.

“A misstep on any of these issues could impact approval ratings, but together the cumulative effect has placed a weight on the president who is difficult to lift and will continue to be difficult to move forward. “said Perry.

Republicans have also strongly criticized Biden’s multibillion-dollar spending plans and his handling of the crisis on the US border with Mexico.

After enjoying a brief honeymoon after taking office in January, Biden’s approval rating plummeted in Utah and across the country. Deseret News / Hinckley Institute polls earlier this year gave it up to 45% approval.

Nationally, Biden had an approval rating of 42.7% and disapproval of 51.4% in early December, according to the FiveThirtyEight poll average.

In Utah, the president’s approval rating has stabilized at 32%, although his disapproval number has declined by a fraction, from 65% to 63% in the latest poll.

“These figures show that President Biden’s approval rating in Utah has remained relatively stable,” according to a spokesperson for the Democratic Party of Utah.

“These Utahns who backed him in the 2020 election are supporting him as he strives to push through strong bipartisan infrastructure investments and presides over historically low unemployment as our economy continues to recover from the pandemic. “

Dan Jones & Associates conducted the survey of 812 registered voters in Utah from November 18 to 30. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.44 percentage points.

Of all the Utah voters in the poll, Biden fared better among those aged 18 to 24 and those who identified themselves as moderate with a 39% approval rating, although more than half of both of these groups disapprove of the work he does.

Women in the survey approve of the president more than men, 38% to 27%. But again, more than half of both men and women disapprove, with the disapproval rate among men rising to 70%.

Unsurprisingly, the president’s disapproval rating in Utah rose to 83% among Republicans in the poll. Among Democrats, a decided minority in the state, its approval rating is 78%, according to the survey.

Biden’s job performance rating among members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the predominant religion in Utah, varied according to their level of activity in the faith.

The poll found that Biden has a 19% approval rating among “very active” Latter-day Saints, 34% with “somewhat active” members and 36% among those who are “not active”.
