Missoula woman resists arrest in traffic and puts officers at risk

On July 21, 2022, at approximately 5:44 p.m., a 911 caller reported a drunk driver in the area of South Higgins Avenue and Beverly Avenue. The caller said the vehicle was all over the road, posted a stop sign and stopped in the road. The caller was particularly concerned because he saw a child in the vehicle. Missoula Police Department public information officer Lydia Arnold picks up the story.

“Officers located the vehicle and observed the driver’s driving behavior,” Arnold said. “The officer carried out a traffic check and contacted the driver, Chanelle Thibault. The officer observed signs of impairment. Thibault refused to get out of the vehicle when the officer asked to take the standardized field sobriety test. Thibault was informed that she was under arrest and still refused to get out of the vehicle. It took several officers to get Thibault out of the car.

The officers had to force Thibault out of his vehicle. The incident happened during rush hour and traffic was heavy. Traffic passed as three officers struggled to handcuff Thibault. According to court documents, Thibault put officers at risk of serious injury by resisting.

“Officers observed an alcoholic beverage in the vehicle,” Arnold said. “The officers were able to locate a responsible person to come and take care of the child. Thibault continued to be uncooperative when coming into contact with law enforcement. During the investigation, Thibault told the police something to the effect that she had made a mistake this evening. The first 911 callers stayed and provided statements to police about their sightings. This case is still under investigation with the Missoula Police Department.

Thibault is currently charged with criminal endangerment of a child, criminal endangerment and obstructing a peace officer.
